"The St. Valentine's Day
Massacre"
Jake LaMotta vs. Sugar Ray
Robinson
Chicago Stadium - February 14,
1951
A vintage oversized press photo of the
Robinson-LaMotta VI fight which took place on February 14, 1951 in Chicago
Stadium... The fight was given the title "The St. Valentines Day Massacre",
afterwards, because of the vicious beating the weight-drained LaMotta would
take in losing his title on Valentines Day... A very clear and outstanding image
of the end of this contest!!

"The St. Valentine's Day
Massacre"

February 14, 1951, was
the anniversary of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre in
Chicago; and just a few miles away from the infamous
garage where it had taken place 22 years before, 14,802
paying customers packed Chicago Stadium to see what would
soon become known as the "second edition." The attraction
that Wednesday night was the much-ballyhooed matchup of
two divisional champions, welterweight king Sugar Ray
Robinson and middleweight titlist Jake LaMotta, fighting
for LaMotta's crown. They did not leave disappointed, as
more fireworks exploded on West Madison Street than had
exploded over Clark Street 22 years before. |
